The jobs being replaced include those in buildings like hotels and offices.
Asbestos abattoirs and other businesses were the first to be affected.
The ABC has been investigating asbestos in Australia since September 2017, following a number of high-profile deaths.
A spokesman for the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet confirmed that the government is in the process of replacing asbestos in Australian buildings.
He said that while there are more than 100 abatements in the pipeline, there are no plans to complete any.
“Asbestos abaters have an opportunity to seek compensation under the Fair Work Act,” the spokesman said.
In the meantime, the government has launched an investigation into asbestos in other countries.
It has also asked the federal and state governments to consider whether asbestos should be regulated in their jurisdictions.
There are currently around 4,500 abattages of asbestos in the world, with Australia at the forefront of the fight against the asbestos industry.
