A new study has found more than 30 per cent of people in a suburb of Brisbane will be exposed to asbestos in a matter of months.
Key points:The study found 30 per 100 people will be tested for the asbestos in their homes in the coming months, the ABC understandsThe study, released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, also found many of those who live in high-risk neighbourhoods are already suffering from asbestos related illnessThe results are “very encouraging” and will allow the Government to set up a nationwide health monitoring system, according to a spokesperson for the Health Protection Authority.
“These results suggest the public is not being adequately informed about asbestos exposure,” the spokesperson said.
“The current national public health surveillance system for asbestos exposure does not include all of the affected areas and this is one of the key reasons why this research is very encouraging.”
There is still much to be done in order to provide more effective prevention and assessment strategies, but the findings of this research demonstrate that we can do much more to reduce the health impacts of asbestos.
