More than 30 people have been killed and more than 1,200 have been injured since asbestos was discovered to be one of the most deadly building materials in the world in 1997.
But a string of federal and local government-backed asbestos abate schemes have helped to reduce the damage.
The federal government announced on Tuesday that it was ending its “fear and hate” campaign, which included a warning that anyone who used asbestos-related products would be arrested.
The Department of Health and Human Services also announced a moratorium on new construction of new asbestos-containing buildings in the US.
The announcement comes after the United States Supreme Court ruled in February that the use of asbestos-based insulation in the construction of the Washington DC Metro tunnel, a project that had been delayed by a court challenge, was unconstitutional.
Asbestos was also banned in the United Kingdom and Australia.
US President Donald Trump has promised to repeal the laws that banned asbestos abating and has vowed to scrap the $1.5 trillion federal budget.
